Jamarcus’s Story
For three months, LaShanda and Marcus Lewis didn’t know why their son, Jamarcus, was sick. Some days, he would have a fever of 104 degrees!
“We began to get very discouraged because we had no answer,” LaShanda says.
The family asked another doctor for a second opinion and he sent them almost immediately to Birmingham.
“We arrived in Birmingham at 2:30 a.m. and by 5:30 a.m. Jamarcus was diagnosed with cancer,” LaShanda says.
Jamarcus was diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia and for the last year, he and his parents have traveled back and forth from their home in Ozark to Birmingham for his treatments. It’s a 3-hour drive one way and one that they would be hard pressed to make safely in one day.
“We thank all the donors and volunteers for all that you do to make us feel welcomed, supported and provided for,” LaShanda says.
When we asked Jamarcus what his favorite part of the House is, he said, “the toy store!”
“This is a blessing to our family. We couldn’t afford to stay anywhere else on our trips,” LaShanda says. “When we’re here, we’re safe and comfortable. It’s like a home away from home!”
