Internship Purpose:

The Special Events Intern will serve as supporting role for the Special Events Manager, Development Manager, and Director of Development at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama (RMHCA). The intern will be involved in all aspects of event management and other tasks related to Development. The intern will sit in on committee and board meetings as well as shadow all department heads in order to walk away from their internship experience with a well-rounded view on how nonprofit organizations, RMHCA in particular, are run and managed.


Intern candidates for the position should be enrolled in a college/university and working towards the completion of a degree in the area of Non-Profit Management, Human Services, Hospitality or Communications. Having some volunteer experience with the Ronald McDonald House or with children and families is a plus. Skills required are good oral and written communication, planning, time management, decision making, and problem solving. In addition, the intern must conduct oneself in a tactful manner in dealing with families and volunteers.

  • Possess a high level of organizational skills and be detail oriented
  • Possess solid oral and written communication skills
  • Be skilled at a variety of computer skills, e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint,  InDesign, Social Media
  • Be able to operate standard office equipment (fax, photocopier, etc.)
  • Be able to juggle multiple tasks
  • Possess an interest in a nonprofit career ‐particularly events and fundraising
  • Consent to a background check and have a current driver’s license and clean driving record

Essential Functions:

  • Complete assigned tasks regarding the planning and execution of signature events including, but not limited to Red Shoe Run, Golf Classic, and Heart of the House Gala
  • Attend committee and event-related meetings
  • Assist with logistics, item procurement, and event research for each of RMHCA’s Signature Events
  • Assist in designing and creating event materials and collateral
  • Work to support the Development Team in the execution of the Development Plan
  • Attend Community Events as necessary
  • Work with the Marketing Team on the execution of event marketing, and volunteer recruitment for events
  • Other duties not mentioned above
  • Work in a positive, nurturing manner with volunteers, community groups, donors, and support staff in the House
  • Help Administrative Assistant and Development staff with any database needs
