Birmingham Greek Festival donates $15,000 to RMHC of Alabama

Wow! What a way to start the week here at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama.

Tuesday morning, the Birmingham Greek Festival presented a $15,000 donation to help support our mission. With rising costs, it has become even more important for RMHCA to provide free lodging, meals, laundry, WiFi access, and more to guest families.

RMHCA Chief Development Officer Kate Cleveland (second from right) celebrates the donation with Parish Council Members (from L-R) Jimmy Cosmas, Elaine Lyda and Teddy Hontzas.

We are so grateful to the Birmingham Greek Festival, Holy Trinity Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral, the Parish Council and especially Jimmy Cosmas, Tom Constantine, Teddy Hontzas and Elaine Lyda for supporting RMHCA this year.

This generous donation will help RMHCA provide guest families 120 nights of comfort and care, at no charge to the family. In 2021, RMHCA provided nearly 8,000 nights to guest families so the support of individuals, businesses and organizations like the Birmingham Greek Festival are critical to our mission.

For 49 years, the festival has been a popular way to enjoy and explore Greek culture and food. The event is organized and hosted by the Holy Trinity Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral parish. Parish members “staff” the event and handmake every entrée and dessert. In the opinion of our staff, this is the reason all the food tastes so delicious!

Since 1972, the Greek Festival has donated more than $3 million to local and national nonprofits. RMHCA is grateful to the festival and parish for selecting our mission to benefit from the 2022 event.

Our Ronald McDonald House and Ronald McDonald Family Room are located less than 3 blocks from the Greek Festival location. Guest families were able to enjoy a meal at the Greek Festival, free of charge.

RMHCA volunteers stepped up to assist at the Greek Festival passing out menus and taking orders in the drive-thru. We are grateful for their time!
